Job Summary

The University of Michigan-Dearborn has an exciting opportunity for a Business Intelligence Analyst in the office of Institutional Research and Effectiveness. This position will provide technical expertise to the university’s Institutional Research office (IR) to support institutional reporting, planning, decision-making, and assessment. To this end, the Business Intelligence Analyst will:

  • Develop WebFocus reports.
  • Create and maintain institutional data sets for reporting and analysis
  • Identify, extract, analyze, and report data to provide accurate and timely information to internal and external stakeholders
  • Document methods, processes, and deliverables
  • Work with campus departments to correct data, process issues, irregularities, and inconsistencies in the data system
  • Support other projects and perform other duties as prioritized by the Executive Director of Institutional Research and Effectiveness.

The person in this position will be responsible for gathering business requirements, design, coding, testing, debugging, documentation, and system maintenance for applications in support of university goals for information governance, presentation, reporting and analysis.

The analyst will use a variety of technologies and collaborate with various groups (customers, ITS business system analysts, technical infrastructure) to address the evolving data and information needs of the university, drawing from existing data stores such as the Banner Student Information System and other sources.

The successful candidate will have effective communication skills, demonstrate quality services in collaborating with, supporting, advising, and educating customers and team members on the use of applications, handling of sensitive data, and resolving incidents. The ideal candidate will have extensive WebFocus development experience.

Technologies include: WebFOCUS, Banner, Java, HTML5, JavaScript, SQL, Oracle databases, workflow and other programming languages.

The candidate must be eligible to work in the United States.

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field with two years’ experience in system/application development or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Extensive experience in WebFocus report development.
  • Experience working in a higher education environment, preferably in Institutional Research.
  • Knowledge of relational databases and data warehousing.
  • Experience with SQL and other programming/scripting language.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office suite, with advanced expertise in Excel and Access.
  • Ability to learn and apply new and emerging technologies.
  • Ability to interact effectively and professionally with faculty, staff, and students.
  • Ability to work well with other technical staff
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • High degree of self-motivation, independent and critical thinking, accuracy, and attention to detail.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Knowledge and experience with business intelligence reporting tools.
  • Experience with Banner student information system or comparable application.
  • Experience supporting and documenting mission critical software applications.
  • Experience with Java, HTML, WebFocus, Degree Works, Image Now, Oracle, and SPSS or other statistical software.
  • Experience working in higher education highly desired and those with experience working in/with Institutional Research strongly preferred.
